Popular with tour groups, but also open to Cubans, this mid-size property on the eastern outskirts of the city is a reasonable mid-priced option. Although it's a long (and sweaty) walk to downtown, nearby sites of interest include the city zoo plus San Juan Hill – site of the famous battle in the Spanish-American War. The hotel is actually quite a handsome property with an appealing lounge bar plus a swimming pool (plus separate kiddy's pool) that gets lively on weekends, when local families make flock.

One of the two restaurants is supposedly gourmet, although we find that a bit of a stretch, despite its elegant decor. There's a rental car office plus Internet desks on-site, and the hotel hosts a mini Las Vegas-style cabaret.

The 111 air-conditioned rooms are in four-plex units spread throughout tree-shaded grounds. All are spacious and have satellite TV, radio, phones, mini-refrigerator, and in-room safe. The upper story rooms are preferred for their lofty ceilings that help dissipate the heat. Not all rooms have showers (some have tubs only), and many of the fixtures are faulty, including plumbing and lighting. Unlike the engaging lobby, the guest quarters feel run-down and are ready for a refurbishing.
